Walpole Dairy Farmers Face Crisis

Did you know that Walpole area dairy farmers are facing an unprecedented market crisis that is threatening their very business existence?  Costs of feed, facilities, labor and other things that go into producing milk have risen to around $19 per hundred weight for milk and yet the "take it or leave it" price our farmers are getting has cratered to $9-10 dollars per hundred weight!  And it's not just Walpole dairy farmers...it's family farmers throughout the northeast.  Unless something is done very soon, few of them will be able to stay in business much longer!

(By the way, have you noticed retail milk prices dropping as the wholesale prices are crashing? Neither have I!)  You can help local farmers by buying local raw milk at local outlets at Brookfield Farm (organic) at 460 Old Drewsville Road (call ahead at 445-5104 to check on availability) and at Great Brook Farm (open everyday from dawn to dark and also featuring Walpole Creamery Ice Cream and other items) on County Road. Re: Walpole Dairy Farmers Face Crisis
Milk at Market Basket was $1.99. Couple of weeks ago it was around $2.30...Not everyone can drink "raw" milk. Bill

Re: Walpole Dairy Farmers Face Crisis
Just a quick clarification. It is Brookfield Farm (near the far end of Old Drewsvilee Rd) that sells milk (from pasture raised cows). Their number is the one given, 445-5104. Abenaki Springs Farm sells certified organic veggies, herbs, and berries, and meat from pasture raised animals. Their number is 445-2157. Jill
