Re: Walpole Regional Food Center Discussion
Here's the text I (jillrobin AT gmail.com) sent Chuck for this entry: Regional Food Center Meeting Walpole, NH, (June 11, 2009) Confidence in the safety of our food supply is declining just as food prices are increasing. Many of us are wondering what we can do to ensure that everyone has access to healthy, affordable, local food. Organizers for Post Oil Solutions (POS) Regional Food Sustainability Campaign have begun to investigate the possibility of creating a Regional Food Center. POS is holding meetings to share its current thinking about the Center, and to solicit input from interested parties. As it is presently envisioned, a Regional Food Center would include a retail market and cafe featuring locally-produced food. It would also include a licensed industrial community kitchen that could be used by farmers to make value-added products, by local citizens to do canning and other food preservation, and for workshops. Other possibilities for a Food Center (which might include a network of buildings) could be a storage facility for farmers, a composting center, and a processing center for grains and oil. TriVillage Energy, Walpole’s energy committee, is hosting an information and listening session with POS about the Regional Food Center at the Walpole Town Library (at 48 Main St.) on Monday, June 22, 2009 at 6:30 pm. Everyone is welcome to come help envision the future of food in our area. Post Oil Solutions (www.postoilsolutions.org) is working to increase community self-sufficiency for a post-petroleum society. The Regional Food Sustainability Campaign works to increase our ability to feed ourselves with locally-produced food. For more information about the Regional Food Center, email foodhub@postoilsolutions.org or call 802-869-2141.
