Opinion: Silence is Dunkin'

At the December 12 Planning Board meeting, Ben Daviss reported information he had received, apparently from a well-placed source, that Dunkin' Donuts had targeted Walpole for a new store and was training someone to be its manager.  I thought I would investigate a bit further by phoning the Dunkin' Donuts corporate headquarters in Canton, MA to inquire.

I checked their web site at www.dunkindonuts.com and called them last Friday afternoon.  Interesting! In an age where most businesses are eager to respond to public inquiries, at Dunkin's web site you find very few names, no phone numbers and no email addresses.  Actually I finally found one phone number and, fortunately, that was for press inquiries.  So...I left a message about why I had called and requested a call back.

So far silence! CCB

Nothing like stealth development? Thanks, Chuck. Keep after it if you can. Mel

Re: Opinion: Silence is Dunkin'
Perhaps they heard about the reception Berkshire received and feel the need to wait until they have completed a quiet, behind the scene investagation. Maybe they are joining an already established business like they have been doing in so many locations and will not be subject to the restrictions so well known to new businesses trying to come into our area. With one in Westminster Station and one in BF one could only wonder why they would bother. Bill Moses

Are people afraid of Munchkins? :)

Re: Opinion: Silence is Dunkin'
Judging by the amount of trash bearing the DD logo on Upper Walpole Road, one would think that we already have a DD here in Walpole. Let me go out on a limb here and guess that whatever covert plans they are hatching ("stealth development" - great term, Mel!) do not include locating their "store" in the village. Perhaps I am naive, but it seems to me that they would already have a location either picked or already purchased; therefore wouldn't SOME town official have an idea of what is planned? Good work Chuck - keep bird-dogging it! Thanks, Cathy

Re: Opinion: Silence is Dunkin'
Do we blame Dunkin' for our roadside trash and therefore oppose them? Really! Perhaps we should close Jiffy Mart, Shaws, Ocean Job etc etc. It is not the businesses that litter our roadways. It is the insensitive slobs that throw their trash out the windows. How many of us stop and pick up a piece of trash to help beautify our roadsides unstead of just complaining about the prospect of a new business coming to town! Bill M.

Re: Opinion: Silence is Dunkin'
Bill, you are absolutely right about people being "insensitive slobs"; why, therefore, would we want to give them any more ammunition in the form of the portable trash fast food restaurants like DD generate? And, by the way, Jeff and I collect a minimum of one bag of trash every day from Upper Walpole Road and the Plaza when we walk our dogs. Wish more people would. Cathy White

Re: Opinion: Silence is Dunkin'
Glad that there are a few of us picking up about town. My litter patrol is the village and lower Wentworth Road. I'm sorry, but using the "ammunition" logic, we would need to ban the sale of beer and soda in town.

Re: Opinion: Silence is Dunkin'
Thanks Jack! You are right, Coke, Pepsi and the beer companies sell their products in containers. The fact they end up on the road side is not their fault, in fact they promote proposal disposal. Just returned from Keene. If roadside trash was blamed on the businesses, more than half of the places would be "run" out of town.
